Hello, fellow parents of the world! I see you there, staring despairingly at your calendar, watching as the days of summer wane and the school year looms ahead.

You know what comes after the freedom of summer, don't you? It's not the blissful tranquillity of children quietly engrossed in their schoolwork.

No, it's the chaotic whirlwind of autumn, a season that brings its own challenges, as the weather gets colder, and the kids get...well, wilder. The days get shorter, the weather gets chillier, and your kids get...climbier? Yes, you read that right.

Somehow, the four walls of our homes instantly morph into irresistible climbing frames the moment there's a hint of a chill in the air. Suddenly, those cute little cherubs we've been raising all summer turn into pint-sized mountaineers, scaling furniture, walls, and the occasional unsuspecting parent.

So, what's a parent to do when the great outdoors is no longer quite so welcoming, and your living room has become base camp for the next generation of Everest climbers?

Autumnal Walks and Berry Picking

First things first, let's not forget, autumn isn't all about being cooped up indoors. In fact, it's one of the most beautiful seasons to witness, with the leaves changing colors, and the air feeling crisp and clear.

Turn those weekend afternoons into family nature walks. Make a game out of identifying different types of leaves or spotting squirrels hoarding their winter supply of acorns. And if you're lucky enough to live near woodland, there's the added bonus of berry picking. Blackberries, raspberries, elderberries - just make sure the kids know which ones are safe to eat! It’s a fun activity and a sneaky way to teach them about nature. Plus, it sets us up for the next topic, which is…

Autumn Foods—Berry Delicious!

Now, what to do with the spoils of your berry picking adventure? Why, bake of course! Autumn is the perfect time to introduce your kids to the joy of baking. Plus, nothing keeps a child more occupied than the promise of a sweet treat at the end.

You can make berry pies, berry crumbles, berry muffins - you get the berry idea. Not only does this keep them busy, but they also learn some important life skills. And hey, you get to taste test all their creations - for quality control purposes, of course. It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it!

Indoor Activities – Keeping the Little Monsters Occupied

Okay, so you've exhausted their energy with walks, and you've filled their tummies with berry pies, but the day isn't over yet. What's next? Well, now it's time to get creative.

Crafting is an autumn classic. Use the leaves you collected on your walks to make collages or rubbings. Carve pumpkins or make autumn-themed decorations for your home. You can even start making homemade Christmas cards or decorations if you're feeling particularly festive.

Board games are another great way to pass the time - and the competitive element will keep them engaged. Just be warned, a game of Monopoly can quickly turn from a friendly family activity into a real-estate empire building frenzy.

For the more digitally inclined, how about a family movie night with a DIY indoor fort? Let the kids use blankets, cushions, and their wild imagination to create a cosy viewing area. Pop some popcorn, snuggle up and voila, you're all set for a fun-filled evening.

The Key to Sanity? A Good Laugh!

Finally, let's talk about sanity. I know, it's a fleeting concept when you're a parent, especially when you're trapped inside with restless children. But I've found that the best way to keep your sanity intact is to have a sense of humour.

Did your child just use your favourite

lipstick to create a 'lovely' mural on their bedroom wall? Well, consider yourself the proud owner of an original, one-of-a-kind piece of abstract art. Did you step on a Lego piece for the thousandth time today? Congratulations, you're now a seasoned firewalker.

Yes, it's hard. There will be messes, there will be noise, and there will be moments when you question your sanity. But remember, you're not alone. We've all been there, and we've all survived to tell the tale.

So, embrace the chaos, enjoy the sweet moments, and keep a mop handy for those not-so-sweet ones. Autumn with kids can be a whirlwind, but with a little creativity and a lot of humour, you'll get through it, and maybe even have some fun along the way!

Happy Autumn, everyone, and may your coffee be stronger than your toddler's willpower!
